TKWs Institute of Banking & Finance (IBF) organised a visit to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) last week. Taking advantage of this golden opportunity, all the students of UG and PG program became a part of this exciting visit. The main reason of TKWsIBF for organising the event was to propel experiential education to which the Institute is fully committed.
The session started with the students learning about the history of SEBI; it’s working and standing in the current operating exchanges in India.

How SEBI came into existence?
SEBI was established on April 12, 1992, in accordance with the provisions of the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act, 1992. The Preamble of SEBI describes its basic functions as “To protect the interests of investors in securities and to promote the development of and to regulate the securities market and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.”
What is the role and relevance of SEBI?
In the session, it was explained to the students that SEBI acts as a regulator, and hence, it cannot enforce anything on anybody in the case of even frauds. However, the SEBI officials present in the session cleared that their motto is investor safety and investor awareness. They always guide the investors to avoid frauds. Giving an example, they said that they often tell the investors to never sign columns in a form without reading and knowing about them clearly.
What comes under SEBI preview?
All transactions made in securities market is subject to the guidelines of SEBI. All the primary and secondary market transactions done in stocks are under the preview of SEBI.
How does SEBI work for the benefit of investors?
SEBI runs a lot of awareness campaigns through which they make the investors aware of what has to be believed and what not. SEBI also advertises through news channels and various other mediums for visibility. It also conducts free seminars and invites people from all classes to spread awareness about frauds.
Impact of SEBI visit on TKWsIBF students
Students learnt various important aspects of SEBI. The learning session was followed by interactive Questions & Answer round wherein the students got to speak their minds and share their queries. SEBI officials listened to every query of the students patiently and answered all the questions well. The Q&A session was followed by an informal networking session with the staff of SEBI. With snacks and a photo session, the visit came to an end.
The SEBI visit was a part of the curriculum of TKWsIBF designed to combine practical exposure with academic inputs. These visits prepare the students for facing the challenges in the career and also aid in preparing for the PO exams.
