Diploma and Degree – Apples and Oranges?

diploma-or-degree
They are comparable, similar-sounding and headed to the same goal; but both roads are quite
different.

Most students get confused between the terms diploma and degree. Some even use them interchangeably. It is important to note that they have their own unique significance and relevance.

Are Degrees better than Diplomas?

For many years, the word Diploma was associated with courses that offered low-end skills. But with time, it has come to be reckoned equally effective and in many cases more powerful than degrees. Even prestigious Institutions like IIMs, MDI and top notch Institutes are offering Post Graduate Diplomas.

The Diplomas pack a punch in just one year. The learning is highly focused, the skills imparted are comprehensive. The Faculty is directly from the Industry, lending a highly practical value to the course.

Degree courses are often the ones that an autonomous body, college or university offers and often come with accreditation from bodies like AICTE, UGC, etc. Diploma courses are programmes that are designed, and specifically offered, by an educational institute or college. The duration of a degree course also tends to be longer than that of a diploma. The same distinction would operate at the graduate level and post-graduate level.

Degree types are often categorised as a bachelor, master, associate and doctorate, awarded by Universities or colleges with accreditation.

Recognised and certified institutes offer diploma certificates. They can be divided into graduate and postgraduate diplomas. As to affiliation and recognition, only technical institutes come under the ambit of the AICTE or the All India Council for Technical Education. This body ensures that standards are maintained and implemented well for a given course and in a given institute. So if a person gets a certificate from an AICTE-affiliated institute, the course can be taken as a degree as well.

But diplomas can also be offered without these two affiliations. In fact, some of the reputed Institutions in the country like ISB does not offer a degree program.

What really matters for a great job?

Neither degrees nor diplomas can fetch you the job you desire let alone keep one. Only relevant skill sets can get you the right position in which you can grow. What is particularly interesting is the part of emphasis on on-the-job skills that is prominent in case of a diploma. The role of experiential learning and vocational training is accentuated in a diploma and that is how they are designed too. The idea is to equip a student in all practical facets of a subject – way beyond the heavy academic focus that a degree has.

Here’s some edge you can tap with a Diploma

In short, if the idea is just to go for higher education, go for a degree by all means. But if the goal is long-term career building that your radar is looking for; then, it would be wise to consider a diploma option in that field. Try to research well on alternatives that are around. For instance, a TKWsIBF PG Diploma would hold more water and weight than a comparable Degree because a student can whet not just theory but actual-usable and necessary skills as well as competencies that are vital for this industry. The Institute focuses on Experiential Learning Technique(ELT) through industry-linked assignments. And this is augmented by lectures from Top American Universities. The employers would eventually want to see such a balance and sharpness in the candidate. The focus on real-world knowledge and competence, plus, the luxury of studying in niche subjects are advantages that a diploma carries better when compared to a degree. To add to that, the course done here would not eke out too much time or investment either.

So make your choices right. Research well before betting your future anywhere.

Invest in the right course. Invest in a bright future.
